The Boston-based '60s soft rock quartet was another casualty of the "Bosstown Sound" promotion generated by MGM Records, which tried to manufacture an East Coast rock "scene" similar to San Francisco’s. But Orpheus -- comprised of singer/guitarists Bruce Arnold and Jack McKenes, bassist Eric (The Snake) Gulliksen, and drummer Harry Sandler -- managed to beat the hype and record three well-received albums between 1967-1969 -- including Ascending, which landed at #10 on Playboy's "Best Vocal LP" list of 1969... tucked in comfortably between Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Are You Experienced?! Always a powerful live act, the band also recorded songs such as "Can’t Find the Time to Tell You" (covered by the likes of Hootie and the Blowfish) and "I’ve Never Seen Love Like This" -- tunes that remain head-and-shoulders above most "love" songs recorded in the '60s. The band recently reunited as Orpheus Reborn with 3 of the 4 members that recorded their three albums and still plays the occasional local gig. |
